Signs of a Gas Leak

Natural gas is odourless making leak detection impossible. That's why a chemical compound, methyl mercaptan is added which gives the gas a pungent smell of sulphur or rotten eggs.

Watch out for the following signs of a gas leak:

  • The smell of rotten eggs or cabbage
  • Hissing or whistling noises from a gas appliance or gas pipes
  • Gas running out quicker than usual
  • A yellow or red flame from your gas stove or a weak flame
  • Dying house plants or grass
  • Bubbles in standing water
  • A cloud of dust near gas pipes
  • Physical symptoms including nausea, dizziness, headache, breathing issues which happens when you are indoors but go away when you go out of your home
  • Your pets may also show the above physical symptoms

Note: Call the emergency services or visit the hospital if you are experiencing any health issues.
