Also known as the water compliance certificate QLD, this document proves that your property is water-efficient. Water conservation is crucial in Australia and that can be achieved by installing efficient plumbing fixtures.

If you are a property owner or manager, a water efficiency certificate is essential - if you are charging tenants with full water usage.

If you are a tenant, it is important to know about your legal obligations. According to the Residential Tenancies Authority, tenants can only be charged if it is mentioned in the rental agreement, if the premises is water efficient and individually metered. Features of a Water-Efficient Property

A water-efficient property has:

• Cold water taps with a maximum flow rate of 9 litres per minute.
• Single mixer taps with a maximum flow rate of 9 litres per minute.
• Showerheads with a maximum flow rate of 9 litres per minute and a minimum 3-star WELS rating.
• Toilets must have a minimum 4-star dual flush rating under the WELS scheme.
• Toilets with a half flush capacity of 3.5 litres and a full flush capacity of 6.5 litres. Additionally, they must have a maximum average flush volume of 4 litres.
• Water using appliances like dishwasher or washing machine has a minimum WELS rating of 3 stars.
• Pools/spas use covers to reduce evaporation.
• Water-efficient garden irrigation systems.

Additionally, you can also install flow-restricting aerators and upgrade plumbing fixtures to save water. No leaking taps should be present when the water-efficient devices are installed.

The flow rate is applicable for internal fixtures used in kitchen and bathroom hand basins. It doesn't apply to bathtub taps, laundry taps, or outside taps for the garden, dishwasher and washing machine.
